Limited Editions Club - The Book of the Dead 1972 #257/1500. The Book of the Dead is a collection of ancient Egyptian mortuary texts made up of spells or magic formulas; copies of the work were placed in tombs to protect and aid the deceased in the afterlife. Probably compiled and reedited during the 16th century BC, the collection includes Coffin Texts dating to approximately 2100 BC, Pyramid texts dating to approximately 2350 BC, and other writings. Later compilations included hymns to Re, the sun god. Many copies of the book have been found in Egyptian tombs, but none contains all of the roughly 200 chapters.

The collection was given the title Book of the Dead by Richard Lepsius, a German Egyptologist who published the first collection of the texts in 1842. For our absolutely stunning edition, Dr. Faulkner made a new translation and also provided the Introduction. There are two volumes: the first is the text, and the accompanying volume contains reproduced scenes painted in the original Papyrus of Ani at the British Museum and photographed there by Peter Parkinson. The 24 panels have been mounted in the form of a concertina.

The scene accompanying the title spreads of both volumes is also from the Ani Papyrus. John Dreyfus designed the format of our books, and chose English Monotype Walbaum for the text. For the printing of both the text and the vignettes, we are obliged to The Curwen Press of London.

For the white wove paper, we owe our gratitude to the Abbey Millis in Hollywell, Flintshire, Wales; the plates are printed on Linson. The two volumes are bound in black and red buckram, respectively, with identical Egyptian decorations stamped in pigment and metallic leaf. The slipcase is covered with genuine cedar veneer.

The glassine is in great shape and protects the books. This is number 257 of 1500 copies. This is a unique offering, even for the Limited Editions Club, and it is seldom made available in the marketplace.

The reproductions from the British Museum alone make the second volume a highly desirable art book. Further, both volumes are carefully crafted by the finest artisans using the highest grade materials. The offer should appeal to Egyptologists of any rank -students, teachers, scholars.
